First 4 VH albums all great and the new one is surprisingly good too.
Yeah, I can't say I was ever into Van Halen, but I remember when that album came out. The consensus (I gather) is that their first four were their best. But Fair Warning, which many felt was totally solid, failed to generate much airplay and met with only so-so sales. Which may have been why the changed course on Diver Down, the album that many longterm fans thought marked their decline.
Yeah, I am a recent convert, partly because there are all these strange little musical moments in their songs...certainly like the first four but havent explored Diver Down fully yet...don't think I am particularly opposed to 1984 either ( i certainly like Jump)also trying to like Kiss who apparently also had a "disco" phase, though their appeal is proving more elusive...any recommendations on anything?
I'm not the best to ask. I just remember finding early VH to be fairly unobjectionable, if not pretty alright at times. But some people draw very firm lines about such stuff. KISS? Def can't help you there, because I was never into them at all. They were popular when I was in grade school; which, depending on who you talk to, was the group's main target demographic in the first place -- males under the age of 15. And there may be some truth to that, because I remember there being lots of ads for all their albums in DC and Marvel comics throughout the '70s.
